Winter Pruning:
Just because trees are dormant in the winter doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t take care of them. Actually winter is a perfect time to prune. With the leaves off the trees, it is easier to sport defects and dead limbs. By taking an inventory of your property at the beginning of winter you can remove hazards prior to storms hitting.
Mulch:
Although we all think of mulch as a way to help beautify our property in the spring it is also a useful way to help prepare for the cold days of winter. A thin layer of mulch will act as a blanket and give the tree’s roots a little extra protection from the extreme cold weather and help retain water.
Watering:
For young trees occasional watering in the winter can save a tree, if the temperatures permit. Watering should occur only when the soil and trees are cool, never when frozen.
